The Foundation’s Somaliland Early Childhood Education programme seeks to increase access to quality Early Childhood Education (ECE) for children from poor and middle-income families, by integrating ECE into the public education system.
Since 2016, we have built and incorporated 12 ECE learning centres into 12 public schools in Hargeisa. These have a yearly capacity of 790 pupils, giving children an opportunity to establish strong foundations and ensuring the healthy development of young children to enable them to reach their full potential.
Our admission is open to all on a first come first serve basis, targeting pre -school children aged 5-6 years, offering girls and boys equal opportunities. The children are taught and assessed using the International Development and Early Learning Assessment (IDELA) which is a rigorous global assessment that measures motor development, early language and literacy, early numeracy/ problem solving and socio-emotional skills, setting a strong foundation for primary education.
Our programme has enabled the establishment of an ECE unit at the Ministry of Education Services (MoES), the development of the provisional ECE curriculum and training of the first group of ECE teachers. The Foundation works in close collaboration with the MoES in the development of National ECE policy and curriculum. By doing this, our overall mission is contributing in setting the ECE quality benchmark on which other stakeholders can emulate and build on.
